When an old page is retired on a website, it is important that the page is redirected to a suitable alternative. For users, this is an important part of the user experience so that they can continue on their journey elsewhere rather than hitting a dead end. For search engines such as Google, redirecting webpages allows the value of the old page to be passed to the new page and retained in the website rather than getting lost altogether.
Redirection is a great free plugin for WordPress that covers all your redirection needs. The Redirects tab covers the most simple redirect of one URL from A to B and allows you to check the redirection is working as expected. If you have a large amount of redirects to do, you can use the Import feature to upload a CSV of all your redirects in one go.

Aside from the core functionality, additional features include the ability to use a regex in the redirection URL. For example, adding “/url-website-section/.*” would allow all URLs from a retired subsection of a website to be redirected in one go. Finally, the 404 tab can be used to keep track of any dead pages that you may not have been aware of.
