When publishing a website or conducting scheduled maintenance, it can be useful to display a temporary message to tell the customer the website is unavailable for a short time. This way, the user does not try to interact with a broken, partially published website and can avoid a terrible user experience.

For those using WordPress, there is a handy maintenance mode that can be used to display a short message to the user: “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”.

To enter maintenance mode, go to the root of the website’s server folder on your hosting provider. Create a file called “.maintenance”. Inside this file, add the code sample below:

When you want to put your website back to normal, simply delete the .maintenance file and refresh your website.
